This was George Stephenson's original 1840 route from Derby to Leeds that became the Midland Railway's main line to the north. It was not until 1870 that the line via Dronfield to Sheffield was opened. Passenger services on the "Old Road" ended in 1954. However it remains an important freight and diversionary route. The day was declared a public holiday so what better way to celebrate than photographing "Deltics". This was their final summer in service and they could be found on the York - Kings Cross semi-fast trains. So of to Naburn just south of York. No Selby avoiding line in those days.
