D1506
Welcome
Welcome to my collection of black and white railway photography. The majority of the photos on this site were taken in the 1970s and 1980s.

Until 1980 I used a Practika LTL which was then replaced by a Nikon FM.

Contary to all the advice in books and magazines I experimented with various film/developer combinations over the years. Some of which were more sucessful than others.

The images on this site have been scanned from negatives using a Dimage Dual Scan IV. The scans are then "processed" using Neat Image and Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop Elements.

The title of the collection comes from the first railway photograph I took. D1506 at Doncaster in 1963.

My recent attempts at railway photography can be found on my other Fotopic site

The Old Road

This is the name given to the line from Chesterfield to Rotherham via Staveley. This was George Stephenson's original 1840 route from Derby to Leeds that became the Midland Railway's main line to the north. It was not until 1870 that the line via Dronfield to Sheffield was opened. Passenger services on the "Old Road" ended in 1954. However it remains an important freight and diversionary route.

The majority of these photographs were taken in the 1975 to 1984, when I lived and worked in the area

29th July 1981 Royal Wedding Day (Charles and Diana). The day was declared a public holiday so what better way to celebrate than photographing "Deltics". This was their final summer in service and they could be found on the York - Kings Cross semi-fast trains. So of to Naburn just south of York. No Selby avoiding line in those days.
